  2. Case Study: The Vibrant Pink Marble Bar Making An Impact

With a growing desire within hospitality to be the most memorable amongst its peers, Ate O’clock York has definitely set itself ahead of the rest. Using a brightly lit stunning pink marble bar as a central feature, Ate O’clock certainly won’t be lost in the crowd.

JMDA wanted to create “an iconic, modern place for those dining and drinking”.

    – JMDA Ltd

    KEEPING THINGS LOCAL

The owners of Ate O’clock are keen to work with local suppliers. This led them to choosing to work with York based JMDA Design to rejuvenate the venue and create the perfect bar.

A MODERN BAR IN A MEDIEVAL CITY

Ate O’clock is located within the heart of York, offering European and British food throughout the day and night. The redesign wanted to attract those looking for a modern and youthful bar in a historical city. Catering to those who live in York and those who enjoy visiting, as well as a large student population.

Due to the struggles within the hospitality industry over the last few years Ate O’clock wanted to create a lively, exciting place to visit. The use of the striking pink marble bar creates the perfect memorable centre piece. The designer JMDA opted to use the exclusive pink marble Rock n Rose from Versital and included a custom decorative edge detail for more impact.

Alongside the comfy booth seating and mood lighting, this is a place you want to spend your time.

NEW DRINKS AND A POP OF PINK

As you enter the new bar and lounge area, the lively energy will greet you. With a new drink’s and reinvented food menu, Ate O’clock didn’t leave anything out.

Food is obviously very important too, so a lot of time has been spent with the chefs, making sure the menus are delicious, relevant, and tempting.

Same goes for the drinks, which have been created with a mixologist so they taste delicious and can be enjoyed with food or in the lounge area.

    –       Alex, Owner

The vibrant pink bar has been partnered with a monochrome marble and botanical features, creating a contemporary and lively ambience. A quirky design feature includes an array of clocks of all shapes and sizes, frozen at eight O‘clock – you will lose all track of time amongst the beautiful interior and new menus.

Multiple areas have been created within the venue for many purposes, from sitting at the bar and watching cocktails being made, through to more intimate seating within the booths ideal for dining.

  3. The Cut & Craft Leeds : Prestigious Grade 2 Restaurant Transformation

Studio Two has worked with The Cut & Craft on many sites. This time, the brand appointed the designers for the historic venue in the Victoria Quarter, Leeds to create a restaurant transformation like no other.

Made up of two former retail units, The Cut & Craft sits in a prestigious grade II listed building. No expense was spared on the £1.3million refit which has resulted in a multiuse restaurant and dining space.

The restaurant transformation design incorporated the original features of the building, maximising them throughout the venue with bespoke joinery and combining a variety of materials and texture.

    Titanic Influences

Conceived based on the tale of the British passenger liner The Titanic’s bandmaster, Wallace Hartley, who played in nearby Bradford at Collinson’s Café as part of their regular string quartet, the restaurant’s design concept is massively influenced by the colour blue.

“We experimented with several shades before collating an array of tones that were strong, striking, welcoming yet regal”

“We used the colour to embellish key areas of the space such as the reception, booth seating and the unmissable bar. We ensured the blue was standalone and paired with sympathetic more muted hues, creating a crucial sense of harmony.”

    Studio Two

“Working with the clients established branding, we were keen to enhance the ‘Cut & Craft’ identity throughout the space whilst designing to our carefully curated concept,”

    Studio Two

    Bathroom Goals

Not to be outdone, the washrooms for this venue were created to be something of a talking point in themselves. Walking into the washrooms you are greeted by what can only be described as a riot of colour and opulence. The main focal point of this area has to be the custom vanity tops designed by Studio Two using the pink marble Rock N Rose from Versital.

They went all out, embracing the curved walls of the room with huge semi circular vanities and splashbacks. The addition of art deco style details with the brand new reverse waterfall edge detail was the perfect finishing touch.

Feature lighting highlighting details to the mirrors and ceiling coving adds to the overall effect.

It is always a pleasure to work alongside Studio Two on projects – they are always so creative with their designs and push the boundaries with the materials they use. They opted for a beautiful jewel toned pink marble vanity and then added to it with a gorgeous art deco style edge detail. Just stunning!

Versital is ideal for washrooms and bathrooms where the design calls for a striking finish, but they also need to be mindful of practicalities such as upkeep. Being waterproof and stain proof it is ideal for washroom vanities, as well as being extremely hygienic.

    The Details

The walls are the perfect complement to the vanities. This striking wall paper from Arte’s from new range adds a grandeur to the space and perfectly complements the vanity area as the main focus for the room.

  4. The George Hotel : Grade 2 Independent Hotel Design and Rebrand

The George Hotel was originally a Georgian coaching house. The building’s primary use hasn’t changed over the centuries and it’s now an independent hotel. Recently purchased by Roberta Goody, a writer and creative who lives in the local area.

“The transformation of a former Georgian coaching house into a destination bar and restaurant.”

    Faber Design

Amidst the backdrop of lockdowns and restrictions, the design brief to Faber called for escapism, transporting guests to another time and place.

    Timeless Contemporary Design

The work for Faber was focused on the ground floor public areas; reception, bar, restaurant and orangery; with the aim of creating a destination F&B business tailored to both the local market and guests of the hotel.

Narrative is at the heart of the concept. In envisioning the hotel, we wrote a story; a love affair, set amongst the atmosphere of Victorian England, between George and Mary. Their journey through life is woven through the fabric of the space; George with his love of travel and engineering; Mary with her love of botanical studies and writing.

    Faber Design

    The Bar area: Gentlemans club

The bar area is the perfect example of where design and practicality meet. The beautiful emerald green tiles to the front of the bar are extremely practical and hard wearing. The cultured marble bar top chosen in Sicilian offers all the beauty of a traditional looking marble bar top whilst also being water proof, stain proof and easy to clean. Following the impact of Covid and lockdown these requirements have become even more important when choosing the most suitable surfaces for a project.

Each space has its own point of reference in the story; the bar, a gentleman’s club with patent illustrations and deep leather bench seats; the orangery, a botanical garden room; the restaurant reflects their travels, with colonial inspired rattan panelling, tropical planting and fossils; and the reception area, the study with a leather lined writing desk and oversized family portraits.

    Faber Design

The end result provides a series of spaces that work independently and as a whole. The consideration given to every detail of the experience, from tableware and glassware to menu design and staff uniforms, provides guests with a seamless and rich experience.

    Faber Design

    Bathroom Goals Galore

The washrooms were treated to the same care and attention to design and product specification as everywhere else in this venue. A beautiful soft pink and green scheme – with wallpaper from Divine Savages and beautiful upholstered pink seating.

The scheme was perfectly complemented by the classic beauty of Sicilian white marble from Versital for the vanity tops and splashbacks. Not only does the washroom benefit from the beautiful aesthetics of Versital marble, it of course comes with all the benefits you’d expect from our marbles. Versital is extremely hygienic offering the anti-bacterial protection of SteriTouch, as well as being waterproof and easy to clean.

  5. Darleys Derbyshire: Contemporary Restaurant Design at it’s Best

It is always a pleasure to be involved with projects who seamlessly combine an updated contemporary design whilst being true to the history of the building and it’s surroundings. Darleys in Derbyshire is an example of a restaurant that has done this to perfection.

“Sat alongside the River Derwent, creating a timeless and contemporary nod to the classic bistro.”

    Faber Design

    Timeless Contemporary Design

Darleys is located within a collection of converted cotton mills dating from the 18th Century. Serving classic British food throughout the day and night, the redesign of Darleys needed to bring together a diverse range of customers, old and new, creating a timeless and contemporary nod to the classic bistro.

The original restaurant had low ceilings throughout. Being a smaller venue, this was not ideal. Despite it’s attractive location, Faber felt that more could be made of it. A small and poorly designed bar further added to what felt dated and inadequate.

    Loyal Customer Base

Despite this, the restaurant had a lot of loyal customers who needed to come on board for the new Darleys; therefore, the design had to balance the old with the new.

    Original Timber A-Frames

You enter the restaurant into the newly created bar area; here, the ceiling has been lifted to expose the original timber A-frames, creating a much needed sense of space. This enables the dining room, defined by being one step up from the bar, to be intimate and have perfect views of the river. Clear definition between bar area and dining creates two distinct experiences, allowing the bar to be used throughout the day in a more informal style.

    Custom Bar Top Details

To stay with the theme of a contemporary classic, Faber Design approached Versital to help create a more modern and practical bar area. They wanted to lift the areas with beautiful details. Faber and Versital worked together to create a custom edge detail for the bar top that fulfilled the brief.

The bar top needed a traditional feel, with a bit of detail to blend with the surroundings. The beautiful custom drop detail sweeps round the bar seamlessly with no joins or messy details.

Being a cast cultured marble, Versital is ideal for projects like this when a design detail is needed. Traditional marble would require separate pieces putting together around the curve and fixing together. This is where Versital comes into it’s own – we couldn’t be happier with the outcome and have even added it to the range dubbing it the ‘Darley drop’.

  6. Taking Our Place Amongst Britain’s Best

It was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with some of Britain’s best independent designers, including BOBO, Charlotte Jade and Bridge Art, in giving the Pine Marten a complete makeover ready for the Christmas season and 2022.

The project was headed by JMDA, with whom we have worked a number of times, and was considered by all to be a roaring success, transforming the façade of the Yorkshire Pub. From the bathroom vanities to the custom bar top, Versital were involved across all areas of this exciting build.

Green and jewel tones for new bar with marble top

    Versital From The Start

Right from the conception of this project, we were involved in the design process, lending our expertise and engineering know-how to the conversation wherever required. Through these discussions, we were able to suggest colour options and supply samples, as well as creating intricate edge designs for specific areas of the build, such as the meet and greet desk and the custom bar top.

Green and jewel tones for reception area with marble top

Custom Bar Top Gets Trendy Lift

Because our marbles have been used across so many projects this year, we are in the best place to know exactly what’s on-trend at the moment. In creating the centrepiece of the pub – the bar -the designer opted for a striking Busy Carrata, and matched this with the table tops throughout the venue. Using this marble across both the tables and the bar makes the entire venue flow beautifully, with the Busy Carrata colour bringing brightness and energy to the design.

Custom hand made marble table top

    Washroom Gets A Golden Touch

Across the washrooms, we contrasted the Busy Carrata found on the custom bar top with Gold Stratos. Our marble is a great choice for washrooms, as it is protected by SteriTouch anti-bacterial technology. Furthermore, as it can often be cut on site, it is perfect for washrooms which often have unique layouts and to be cut around awkward fittings.

Working on the Pine Marten project was a real honour for us at Versital. It was a joy to work alongside the best of British independents from start to finish on renovating this Yorkshire pub. If you need custom marble for your latest project, across any part of the design, including a custom bar top, talk to us today.

  7. Four Eye-Catching Design Trends For Hospitality Venues

If you’re redesigning the communal spaces in a restaurant, hotel or the like, then you’ll need to be up to date with the latest design trends for hospitality venues. Working the latest trends into your designs will not only wow your clients, but will also ensure that the visitors are asking about the people that put the interiors together. Thankfully, we’ve got a handle on all the latest trends so that you don’t have to.

    Maximalism

Big and bold design is back in a big way. Subtle colours and hide-behind walls have been abandoned across the hospitality industry, and we’ve seen a marked rise in the demand for highly detailed, eye-catching designs. Take Feya, who combined Gold Stratos marble with busy walls and archways to create intrigue and interest across every wall of the bar and restaurant – even combining built structures with real foliage for maximum impact.

    design trends for hospitality

    Biophilic Design

After what is now nearly two years where we’ve seen more of our own walls than anything else, we’ve seen a real return of designs inspired by flowers and nature. At The Ivy, in Manchester, geometric flowers across the furniture are coupled with walls featuring all manner of birds, all united with a distinct Asian style which reflects the cuisine available. Biophilic design has always been popular, but it would be foolish not to note the return of this design trend for hospitality venues.

    design trends for hospitality

    Marble

At Versital, we know all about marble, and we were delighted to provide the marble used to decorate the most luxurious nail salon in the world, the townhouse at Harrods. The townhouse is decked out in Autumn Onyx, which features burnt orange veins running through cream marble, and was completely custom supplied by Versital.

    Harrods Town House Nail Salon

Equally stunning is the Busy Carrata marble designed for The Red Lion in Oxford, which helped us – in collaboration with JMDA and BOBO1325 – to transform a country pub into a modern, sleek bar. The marble was also perfectly suitable for the washrooms, as it is durable & easy to clean, as well as being protected by SteriTouch anti-bacterial technology.

    design trends for hospitality

    Intricate & Edge Details

With the return of maximalism, it will be no surprise to you that intricate edges are another one of the returning design trends for hospitality this year. In times where design has favoured minimal looks, edges are often left bland-  but they are a superb opportunity to add flourishes and flair. Darley’s in Derby did just that, and they took advantage of the custom cut that Versital is able to offer to achieve stunning edges across their vanity tops. Quite simply, there are no barriers to creativity when you work with Versital.

    design trends for hospitality

At Versital, we know what’s on-trend, because we are being asked to produce by top designers working on top projects – and we are able to work with you on your next project as well. Get a quick quote on our website or get in touch with our expert team on 01204 380780 today.

  8. Pushing Boundaries With Intricate Edges

Design is all about attention to detail. It’s about making sure that that the installations are as beautiful close up as they are within the frame of the entire room. Intricate edge detail can elevate any design, be it a hospitality project, or a domestic home bathroom. Paying attention to the details of surfaces can lead to breath-taking results.

    edge detail

    UNRIVALLED EDGE DETAIL

The more recent trend for intricate design and exciting edge details is by no means limited to surfaces.  The age of minimalist, simplistic interiors seems to be coming to an end, with lots of designers preferring to go beyond expectations – and edge detail is a great way to add interest.

The hospitality sector has really been upping its game in recent years, with lavish designs for interiors creating exciting venues that clients are clamouring to visit.

    INSTA-WORTHY DESIGN

Designers have been pushing boundaries and using high-quality products and exciting materials to make their venue somewhere that customers really want to visit.  With Instagram being a popular way to share and discover locations to visit, beautiful soft furnishings, opulent marbles and stunning wallpapers are a regular feature.

Beautiful interiors and that perfect photo opportunity are great ways to create a buzz about a location and encourage users to share their visit to friends and ‘followers.

    CHANGING TRENDS

Working closely with interiors designers we are in the position to see the changing trends in interior design first hand.  We are frequently being asked to design and supply custom marble with intricate edge details.

We take on a designer’s vision and our engineers work to bring those aspirations to reality. We custom cast all our cultured marble, and can even design bespoke colours like Busy Carrata. Put simply, there are no barriers to creativity when you work with Versital.

    HARKING BACK TO TRADITIONAL DETAILS

Traditional drop details for tops and intricate bull nose bar tops have seen a huge increase in popularity. A resurgence in classic design and often over the top décor have included exciting details that stand the test of time.

    SEAMLESS MARBLE

As Versital is a cast cultured marble, it allows us to create these beautiful edge details for bar tops and vanity tops in one piece, often with no seams or joins. Versital can be cast to create intricate details and drops in one piece. With a real marble, these drop edge details would have to be fixed on as an addition, with visible joins and often a less than neat result. This can be especially visible when going round a curved top where a downstand would have to be pieced together if using real marble.

    Why Versital?

As an independent British manufacturer, we are nimble enough and have the flexibility to react to trends and try new things. Every product we produce is hand-made by expert craftsmen. Our passion is ensuring that any designer’s creativity is met by our ingenuity, allowing us to create any vision with which we are approached.

“We love pushing the boundaries of what is possible and always work closely with designers to make sure we can create products that match with their vision. Recent projects include beautiful intricate edge details for a custom bar, domestic bathrooms as well as a very high end nail spa’s including the brand new Townhouse at Harrods London”.

  9. Designing Bespoke Marble In Exciting Collaboration

In any hospitality venue, the bar should be the centrepiece. It is the place where your customers spend the most time, and if you can make the walk to the bar an enjoyable experience, then you’ll have people staying longer and spending more. Bar design is one of the ways that you can make that walk better – by giving it a show stopping destination. You can also change the feel of your venue; the Red Lion in Oxford has gone from a country pub to a modern bar and restaurant by redesigning the interior.

Busy Carrata bar top designed exclusively by Versital

    COLLABORATION FOR BAR DESIGN

Again, we collaborated with JMDA Design to create the bespoke look for the Red Lion. Versital was on hand to advise the designers and supply custom made bar tops, washroom vanity tops and meet and greet counters. By being involved in so many areas of the project, the look and feel of the venue was consistent throughout the redesign.

We were also delighted to be working alongside Bobo 1325, whose original artwork in fabrics and wallpaper really complements our surfaces for unique interiors.

Our Marketing Director, Gemma Stockberger, said,

“We came across Beth from Bobo whilst working on a number of hospitality projects in the Northwest. We have a lot in common in our outlook on business and design. We love nothing more than to champion independent British creative businesses. It’s such a pleasure when we get together on the same project”.

    BESPOKE COLOUR  CREATION- BUSY CARRATA

It is not only the design which was unique to the venue – the marble “Busy Carrata” was actually created in collaboration with JMDA especially for this project. It was so well received that it has now become a part of the permanent collection.

On this, our MD Debra Langley said

“It is always very exciting when a JMDA project crosses our desk. We know that they understand how to make the most of Versital to get the right result. We collaborated with them to create a custom marble finish ‘Busy Carrata’ which is simply stunning. So nice we simply had to add it to our marble collection.”

If Busy Carrata has given you inspiration for your bar design, then you can talk to us directly and we can supply this unique cultured marble to fit your project. We can work with any design team that you may already have in place to ensure that your vision is realised.

  10. The Wavendon Arms – Mitchells and Butlers

Located in a picturesque town of Wavendon, the stunning newly renovated pub, bar and restaurant is perfect for both locals and tourists alike. JMDA were once again behind this striking design, known for their cutting edge style and out-of-the-box approach.

Beautiful Bar in the Heart of Wavendon

The Wavendon Arms is just one example of Mitchells and Butlers sites JMDA have been involved with. Wavendon is a peaceful town in the south east of England. The pub, bar and restaurant reflects the personality of the locality extremely well. The venue welcomes everyone whether it’s a friends’ night out or a romantic dinner. The large building with a patio and garden offers a range of spots perfect for different situations.

    Bar Top in Caramel

    Spectacular Interiors

For the interiors of the venue the designers opted for a tropical inspired dark theme. Most of the background colours include dark greys, indigo’s and deep green. Their is plenty of natural light, preventing the space from feeling dark or cluttered.

To contrast the dark elements JMDA used plenty of greenery, tropical inspired ornaments and funky paintings of exotic birds.

Wavendon Arms JMDA bar design using Versital

    Two Incredible Focal Points

Their are two main focal points in the venue. The first is the large custom bar area completed by a Versital bar top finished in one of the brand new colours from ‘Inspired by Pantone’ collection, highlighted by LED back lights.  The second is a striking open log burner. The bar top perfectly complements the exotic look of the interiors. Its caramel vein is the ideal match for the overall colour palette.

The Wavendon Arms Open Log Burner

    Breath Taking Surfaces

The Versital bar top is a great finishing touch to the serving area. It works perfectly with the modern exotic style of the venue. Versital surfaces are perfect for high traffic areas as they do not stain or watermark, while having the appearance of real stone.

The designers also opted for Versital surfaces for the table tops as well as bathroom vanities and splash backs, proving versatility of the material. All Versital products including table tops and bar tops are anti bacterial, stain proof and waterproof.  Ideal in high traffic situations.

JMDA paid particular attention to the washrooms at this bar, which is an area often neglected.  Customer surveys have shown that they do appreciate the decor and design used in washrooms when out socialising – often being inspired for their own bathrooms at home!  Mitchells and Butlers are known for continuing the quality of their installations throughout their venues, including washrooms. Beautiful lighting, funky wallpaper and gorgeous marble vanity tops courtesy of Versital come together to create a memorable washroom. As well as looking beautiful, Versital vanity tops are 100% waterproof and stain proof making them an ideal choice for a busy public washroom.
